Natural diamonds were formed 3 billion years ago deep within the Earth's crust. When carbon atoms are subject to high temperatures and pressure, this causes them to crystallize forming diamonds. There are several processes used to alter the color, clarity, or improve durability.
Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical makeup as natural diamonds. The only difference between the two is where they were formed and how much they cost. By replicating the natural process of diamond formation in the earth, scientists can produce them in just a few short months. As a result, lab-grown diamonds typically cost about 50-70% less than natural diamonds.
